Unit L&D/PP/MB/NICU level 2 Misc.
# of L&D Beds 6 with 2 swing rooms (rare but can be used to deliver in if necessary)
# of OR Suites 1 suite on the unit L&D nurses will circulate
# of triage beds 2 swing rooms used for triage
# of Postpartum beds 11
# Nursery beds 4
# of births per day, per year 698 births per year (average of 60 per month)
Do ratios follow AWHONN guidelines? 1:1-2 - labor, cervical ripening
1:3-4 PP, GYN
1:3-4 Nursery
Required Certifications NRP, BLS, ACLS, FHM ( CEFM or AWHONN)
Common diagnoses/Types of patients Level II nursery, 34 weeks above, no prenatal care, few substance abuse mothers, pre-eclampsia, diabetic mothers, multiples (twins only and rare), induction heavy unit, c-sections, GYN surgeries
For NICU: IV placement and management, blood sugars, IV antibiotics, nasal CPAP, average stay is 10 days High risk and those under 34 weeks will be transferred to another hospital
Experience or 'Must have' skills Prefer previous travel experience
Power Chart Maternity through Cerner - prefer previous experience helpful but not a deal breaker
*Nurses on the unit will work all areas listed above and must have experience and be comfortable doing so Night shift nurse must have well rounded, strong skills as well as strong leadership skills
Are RNs required to titrate drips? Yes
Common titratable &/or set rate drips mag*** Pitocin, insulin (rare but must be familiar)
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor Yes, can take assignment (prefer outpatient assignments but may be assigned 1 couplet)
Are there nurse aids/surgical techs on this unit? OB Techs, currently transitioning from OR Surg Techs to OB Surg Techs
OB/Neonatologist in house 24/7? No, will have Pediatricians on call 24/7 that can provide phone consult, no tele visits, Pediatrician can come in as they feel necessary.
RT Equipment (vents, Cpap, BiPap, etc) vents, Cpap, panda warmer
Is there tele on this unit? Monitor Techs? RNs read strips? No tele for moms on unit, baby can be hooked up and monitored by RN if necessary. If mom requires tele will transfer to tele floor.
EFM System Fetal Link
Shifts & Scheduling 7-730 AM/PM, scheduler makes the schedule with manager review. Schedule will be filled in per the needs of the facility, will consider block scheduling but not guaranteed
Weekend Requirement Possible but depends on needs of the unit, ask for flexibility
Holiday Requirement Rotated
Is there a call or standby requirement? No - traveler can volunteer if low census
Floating Requirements Travelers are first to float to be a sitter
Scrub Color/Dress code Provided
Unit/Department specific orientation 2 - 12's on the unit
Additional Notes Critical thinking on the unit is important - can be 3 RN's on shift or 2 RN's and OB Tech. If only 2 RN's there will be a 3rd RN on call that can come in if necessary.
Travelers may assist with new hire orientation as needed.
Unit is very welcoming. Lots of travelers go perm or come back. This unit is partnered with Methodist Women's Hospital and University of Iowa. They have great resources, staffing and guidelines.
Traveler will need to coordinate with Manager obtaining a badge and this must be done during business hours (does not take place during general orientation).
General orientation will take place at Omaha corporate building (located off 168th and Pacific). Unit renovation in 2021
Break room with lockers, will need to bring own lock
