Department: Labor & Delivery
Beds: Labor & Delivery: 3 | Postpartum: 3 | C-Section OR: Located on the first floor (not in-unit)
Birth Stats: Approx. 30 births per year
Floating Requirements: RNs will float to Med-Surg ~80% of the time to take a full patient assignment if there are no laboring patients in the department.
Clinical Practice Highlights:
Couplet Care: RNs manage both mother and baby (labor, delivery, and postpartum in the same room).
Common Diagnoses: Active labor, elective inductions, low-risk pregnancies (37 weeks ).
Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NRP
Drips Used: Pitocin, Magnesium (only for send-outs)
Titration Protocol: RNs titrate drips according to policy.
Staffing & Support:
Charge Nurse: None; collaborative RN staff.
Support Staff: No nurse aides or surgical techs.
OB/Neonatologist Availability: Available with a 15-minute response time (not in-house 24/7).
Anesthesia: Available with a 15-minute response time (not in-house 24/7).
Respiratory Therapy Equipment: PRN nasal cannula during labor only.
Monitoring Staff: No tele/monitor techs. EFM system uses paper charting.
Scheduling and Requirements:
Shift Structure: Self-scheduling with a manager available from 7 AM to 7 PM to ensure balance. Block scheduling may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend, potentially every third weekend.
Holiday Requirements: Every other holiday.
Call/Standby Requirements: May be placed on call due to low census on additional shifts.
Uniform Policy:
Scrub Color: Any color or pattern is acceptable; closed-toe shoes are required.
Orientation Process:
Unit-Specific Orientation: 1 day and 1 night shift on the unit for acclimatization and training.
