Job Title: Medical Coder – Acute Care Setting
Position Summary:
The Medical Coder is responsible for accurately coding inpatient and emergency department (ED) encounters in an acute care setting. The role requires comprehensive knowledge of coding systems, regulatory guidelines, and reimbursement processes to ensure compliance and optimize revenue integrity. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and technical skills, demonstrate proficiency with coding software, and contribute to coder training and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:

Assign accurate and compliant ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes for inpatient and ED medical records.

Ensure coding and abstracting are completed in accordance with ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, CPT/HCPCS guidelines, and payer-specific regulations.

Utilize 3M/HDS encoder applications to complete coding tasks efficiently.

Review medical documentation to ensure proper code selection and identify areas requiring clarification or physician query.

Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease processes to accurately interpret clinical documentation.

Stay current with coding updates, payer regulations, and federal billing guidelines.

Conduct research on complex coding issues and collaborate with internal teams for resolution.

Participate in coder education and training activities to enhance departmental accuracy and compliance.

Maintain confidentiality and uphold all HIPAA standards.
Qualifications:
Education:
-
High School Diploma or GED required.

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management preferred.
Certification:
-
Active AHIMA credential required: RHIA, RHIT, and/or CCS (CCP also acceptable).
Experience:
-
Minimum of three (3) years of medical coding experience in an acute care environment.

Demonstrated experience in inpatient and emergency department (ED) coding.

Proficiency with ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS coding systems.

Previous experience using 3M/HDS coding applications preferred.
Skills & Knowledge:

Strong understanding of federal billing guidelines, payer rules, and coding compliance requirements.

Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and coding encoder software.

Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Pay Rate
$36.71 - $39.91/hour
